This course which commenced in 1994, was designed as a result of numerous enquiries from graduates of non-maritime disciplines who wanted to go into the maritime field. The course serves as an introductory and bridging course between the candidate’s previous area of specialization (e.g. Physics, Geography, Economics, etc) and the maritime field. The course has turned out to be one of the most popular courses on offer in the Academy with an average session intake of 20 students. The course is to be split into two streams, namely, Post Graduate Diploma in Shipping Technology (PGDST) and Post Graduate Diploma in Shipping Management (PGDSM).
These courses are necessitated by the 1995 amendments to the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watch-keeping for Seafarers (STCW), 1978 and recent developments regarding maritime training standards and curricula. The courses are designed to prepare Nigerian Seafarers for STCW ’95 – compliant certification.
These courses, which have gained wide popularity, are designed to train all levels of officers and ratings required for the effective operation of vessels involved in coastal and inland waters trade.
• All the National Diploma and Higher National Diploma Programmes on offer in the Academy (except the HND in Marine Engineering) have full National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) accreditation.
• In compliance with a Ministerial directive given in March 2001, the National Maritime Authority had in June 2002 released N60 million for the procurement and installation of the laboratory equipment required for the accreditation of HAND Marine Engineering Programme. The complement of N40 million, which was to be provided by the Nigerian Ports Authority, has not been given to the Academy, making it impossible to conclude the project.
• Since the admission of Nigeria into the IMO White List, the Academy has striven to rise to the challenge of training more than 5000 Nigerian Seafarers who require re-certification in accordance with the provisions and requirements of the revised STCW Convention.
In addition to the regular Cadet’s programme, the Academy has since March 2002 been training an average of twenty five (25) Nigerian Seafarers weekly on the STCW prescribed basic safety courses. Of late, the number has increased to an average of fifty (50) trainees per week.
